Discovering My Taste in Music
“One of my first dates after my second divorce was with a handsome, debonair lawyer in Dallas. He took me to dinner at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek. It was a fabulous dinner. As he drove me back to my hotel in his throaty Mercedes SL 500 convertible, he asked me what kind of music I liked and what were my favorite restaurants in Austin? I was totally stumped. I couldn’t name a single band. I couldn’t list a restaurant. We always listened to Jason’s music and went where he liked to eat. I had no opinion. None. It was in that moment that I realized that I had become my mother. It was clear that I had a lot of work to do. I needed to figure out what I liked, what I needed, and who I was. I needed to stand on my own. It was critical that I discover who I was before I could be in a relationship with someone else.”
